All inventions, great or small began its life as a mere idea of the inventor, so if you wish to be an inventor, you need ideas. Every single person in the whole world have ideas, they come popping right in every now and then. Since people around the globe have these ideas popping in all the time, why aren’t they inventors? Yes you need ideas, but ideas alone that lie dormant inside your head cannot automatically make one an inventor. It has to take its form into our physical world, it could be an appliance or a machine. How on earth did Porsche become such a well known and sought after luxury brand that it is today? Did the Porsche Panamera bring the name into the big league alone? So get your thinking hats and spreadsheets up and ready because we will be looking at how Porsche changed the definition of luxury and style forever.
Robust Function mixed with sleek form.
The new word of the day is Horological. Horology is the study of the measurement of time.
Luxury car manufacturers like to work with watchmakers to manufacture watches that are inspired by cars. But there is no other company that has dived into horology the way Porsche did.
They have utterly reshape the watch industry drastically. But how did they do this? By joining both function and form. This is the exact philosophy of design by Bauhaus. And that any object’s form cannot be separated from the function and the other way around.
Ferdinand could not settle with just making cars. He wanted to take his design skills to the next level.
He set out into the world to chase his dreams, left his family’s business behind and began Porsche Design. What’s his very first product you say? It was a wrist watch.
Back in 1972 and before nobody was wearing black wristwatches. Ferdinand saw all the shiny gold or even some leather watches and he felt like something was lacking. His first creation was an instant hit, a black steel watch and bracelet.

He didn’t think of any fancy names. It was called the Chronograph. The design was inspired by Airplane gauges.
You need to simply give an analogue watch a quick glance and instantly know what time of day it is. The black steel face with the white markers did that perfectly.
The design is timeless. The watch still looks just as fresh as it did many years ago.
